The Blackwater Mission

At Blackwater Lacrosse, our mission is to develop lacrosse players both on the field and in the classroom to become leaders of the community. We build the character of our players with a focus on honor, courage, and commitment to excel beyond the field. Blackwater lacrosse offers local, regional, and state level competition. Players will learn from the best coaches in the area. Blackwater Lacrosse will provide players with the tools to be successful in all aspects of life and help them reach their lacrosse goals.

Culture

Lacrosse is a team sport, and it takes a team to be successful. Blackwater Lacrosse cultivates a TEAM atmosphere first. Teams are made up of individual players. Each player needs fundamentals and confidence to perform to their potential and overcome challenges. We develop and hone the fundamentals of the game, building a positive mindset within each player. Players work their hardest, and learn the most when having fun, so we cultivate FUN.

Blackwater History

Started in the summer of 2023, Blackwater Lacrosse was formed in Gulf Breeze Florida. It is named after the Blackwater River that runs through Santa Rosa County and empties into the Gulf of Mexico. Our neighboring county Okaloosa which means “black-water” in Choctaw is where the river begins. The Choctaw people have a deep and rich history when it comes to lacrosse. Over 188 years ago, the Choctaw Nation stretched from the Florida panhandle into Oklahoma. In 1834, George Catlin witnessed Choctaw lacrosse in Indian territory near present day Oklahoma. Catlin described ball-play as “a school for the painter or sculptor, equal to any of those which ever inspired the hand of the artist in the Olympic games or the Roman forum.” Lacrosse, which involved a no-holds-barred struggle for the ball, was a physical, even violent, game called “little brother of war” in Choctaw.

We love the game of lacrosse! We love the creative beauty of the game with all its ebbs and flows. It provides its players life lessons, of overcoming adversity, team work, and challenging each person to be the bst version of themselves. We love the lacrosse community and everything the game provides; lifelong friendships, family, careers, and collegiate opportunities. We inspire participants to love the game and all of society. We are our best when others are their best.

Finally, we thrive in creating an environment where participants feel welcomed. Blackwater Lacrosse is where you learn how to play the game of lacrosse. with others who learned how to play lacrosse here as well, oftentimes from coaches who learned to play with us. We know what it feels like to start a new sport with new people and how intimidating it can feel. On the field, we pass the ball to new players and encourage learning through experience. More important than learning the game of lacrosse is making friends and becoming part of the Blackwater family. We know we have succeeded when players have fun, return for future seasons, and attract new youth lacrosse participants to join the next season. So come join the family.
